MASG2019

Maritime Autonomous Systems Group

This market area is the focus for the maritime autonomy interests of members of the Society of Maritime Industries. This expanding market impinges on a wide range of maritime applications such as marine scientific and survey, offshore resource exploitation, maritime transport and defence and maritime security operations.

By way of example, but not exclusively, MAS impacts on oceanography, offshore oil/gas, offshore renewable energy, deep-sea mining and underwater asset management. Members with an interest in this area include manufacturers, academia, researchers, survey companies and system suppliers, and all benefit from the connections and activities provided through membership.

Activities include:

  • Facilitating outward and inward trade missions to create business opportunities through greater international co-operation
  • Arranging information briefings on key developments in the market
  • Organising networking opportunities with those who have a common interest in maritime autonomous systems
  • A regular programme of meetings on various aspects of MAS developments and operations with senior high calibre speakers. Some of these meetings are restricted to members only
  • Assistance with sourcing relevant contacts within the industry

The Maritime Autonomous Systems Group (MASG) Council sets the policy and guides the activities for this market area, utilising the extensive expertise of its council members. A list of council members can be found here

Maritime Autonomous Systems Survey

SMI took the decision to create a new interest group to focus on the business of MAS in 2016 and form a MAS Council of member experts to guide future policy. One of the Council’s first actions was to commission a base line survey of UK companies in the MAS sector to provide an insight into current business activity.

  • The 2018 survey can be viewed here.
  • The 2017 survey can be viewed here.
  • The 2016 survey can be viewed here.

Maritime Autonomy Challenge

Maritime Autonomous Systems are of increasing importance to a wide range of sectors. The UK is a technology leader in this area and aims to enhance this reputation and encourage development and take-up of MAS technologies in the UK. A key part of this mission is to encourage young technologists working in this area and to help them develop careers that contribute to the future of the UK’s MAS industry. The MASG Council are launching a competition for UK-based students. More information on this can viewed here.
